Hence this section discusses in detail about the premier most college of fashion in India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), the top most college of design, the National institute of Design (NID), the most popular common admission test for IIT design programmes, the Undergraduate Combined Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED), the Combined Entrance Exam for Design (CEED) and the most significant common admission test for architecture, the National Aptitude Test for Architecture (NATA). Also to give you a better idea about the various entrance tests paper pattern and structure used as the primary selection criteria by the above mentioned premier institutes of fashion, design & architecture, few entrance exam sample papers and past years papers are being provided here for your ready reference.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DESIGN (NID)

Set up in 1961 by govt. of India, National Institute of Design is a unique institution with design excellence, depth of intellect and a time-tested, creative educational culture in promoting design competencies and setting standards of design education. The various programmes on offer are:

BACHELOR OF DESIGN (B.DESIGN)

This 4-year intensive professional programme is offered in the following disciplines under its three main faculty streams:-

1 Industrial design:   (Specialization in Product design, Furniture and Interior, Ceramic & Glass) 

2.  Communication design:    (Specialization in Graphic Design, Animation, Film & Video, Exhibition)  

3. Textile and Apparel design:   (Specialization in Textile Design)  

MASTER OF DESIGN (M.DESIGN)

This 2 1/2-year intensive professional programme is offered in the following disciplines under its three main faculty streams:-

1.  Industrial design:   (Specialization in Product design, Furniture and Interior Design, Ceramic & Glass, Toy Design, Troansportation Design)  

2.  Communication design:    (Specialization in Graphic Design, Animation, Film & Video, New Media, User Interface Design, Digital Design, Photography Design)  

3. Textile and Apparel design:   (Specialization in Textile Design, Apparel Design & Manufacturing, Lifestyle Accessory Design) 

NID ENTRANCE EXAM PAPER PATTERNS FOR UG & PG PROGRAMMES

PHASE I

Design Ability Test :  The questions are set to test  

1. Observation Power

2. Utilization of form, color, shapes

3 .Innovative ways to look at and describe objects

4.Imaginative expression

5.Drawing & proportion sense

PHASE II

Studio Test : This test evaluates the candidate’s skills for materials handling and innovative ability on a given situation with a given set of materials.

Personal Interview : A candidate is judged on the various parameters like career orientation, personality traits, achievements in academics and co-curricular  activities, G.K., etc.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY (NIFT)

National Institute of Fashion Technology was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion education in the country through network of 15 professionally managed centres Including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar and Hyderabad.

BACHELOR OF DESIGN– 4years 
1. Discipline : Fashion and Apparel (Specializations : Fashion Design /Leather Design)     
2. Discipline : Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories    
3. Discipline : Fashion and Textiles (Specializations : Knitwear Design /Textile Design)  
4. Discipline : Fashion Communication

 

MASTERS PROGRAMMES    

1. Masters in Fashion Management– 2 years 

2. masters in Fashion Technology– 2 years

3. masters in Design  – 2 years

NIFT ENTRANCE EXAM PAPER PATTERNS FOR UG & PG PROGRAMMES

PHASE I

General Ability Test (Common for all UG & PG Programmes) : This test will comprise of various sub-tests as given below:

  1. Quantitative Ability     2. Communication Ability      3. English Comprehension

  4.  Analytical Ability        5. Business Domain Test       6. Thematic Apperception

Creative Ability Test (Only for Design UG & PG Programmes) : This test is administered to judge the skill, power of observation, innovation and design ability of the candidate

PHASE II

Situation Test (Only for Design UG Programmes): The second level of test for under graduate design programmes is Situation Test. This test evaluates the candidate’s Skills for materials handing and innovative ability on a given situation with a given set of materials.  

GD & Interview (For all PG Programmes): The second level of test for all post graduate programmes comprises of GD & Interview. Short listed candidates from the entrance examination are required to undergo this.

NATIONAL APTITUDE TEST OF ARCHITECTURE (NATA)

National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) is being conducted by the Council of Architecture at national level for admission to 5 year B.Arch Degree Course at all recognized institutions across India.NATA scores are used by admissions authorities of different Government, Govt. Aided & Unaided schools / colleges of Architecture.

NATA Paper Pattern

The test measures drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking ability. The test is in two parts. A paper based drawing test for two hours and computer based online aesthetic sensitivity test.

COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR DESIGN (UCEED/ CEED)

UCEED and CEED are all India examinations conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT, Bombay). CEED is a qualifying examination for admission to Post Graduate M.Des. programmes whereas UCEED is a qualifying examination for admission to Under Graduate B.Des. programme at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay; IDDC, IIT Delhi; CPMD, IISc Bangalore; design Programme, IIT Kanpur.

UCEED and CEED Paper Pattern

The examination tests the candidates for visual perception ability, drawing skills, design aptitude and communication skills.
